name: species: Asian soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) sex: U estimated birth: 2009 total length: 5.25" Thank you so much for contacting CoRHS about the many Asian soft-shelled turtles we are sheltering! CoRHS depends on the support of our communities to care for a great number of unwatned reptiles and amphibians. The baby turtles are so far doing very well -- eating, basking, and exploring their habitat. We know you are excited about potentially adopting one of these turtles so let me outline care, cost issues, and other factors: 1. We are not able to verify their sex at this young age. A 55 gallon aqarium will house a single adult male turtle who will likely be smaller than 12 inches. If you end up adopting a female, you will need an aquarium of 75-90 gallons or larger. This size aqarium is almost never donated to CoRHS and retail costs run approximately $100-$300. This is before adding a stand, filteration system, and lights fixtures. 2. Soft-shelled turtles spend most of their day hiding and are mostly nocturnal feeders. This may not be the type of animal you would find interesting as a pet. 3. Turtles have long lives -- at least 15 years we believe, if not much longer. Our excitement and enthusiasm regarding the adoption of these turtles must be tempered by the reality of their specific needs. If you feel you can make a commitment to care for this animal for the length of its life, we strongly encourage you to fill out an adoption application. If a pet turtle is not the right choice for you, we hope you will consider supporting to CoRHS in the form of a turtle sponsorship or other donation. Again, thank you for helping CoRHS care for these beautiful turtles! We're thankful we can provide them what they need and give committed families the opportunity to adopt! Please read about soft-shelled turtle care. Please visit our habitat requirements for this animal before submitting your application.
